THE IMMUTABLE LAWS OF HANDICAPPING
PART 24 and CONCLUSION
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER You have just
witnessed over 40 years of intense empirical observations---that is, if you started with Part 1 and completely read this 24-part mini-series up to this very word.
The data collection took half of
my lifetime. Half my lifetime that is, if I can remain lucky and wager for another 40 years or until I’m a ripe 95!
Fortunately, understanding the fullest potential in you to become an even more
successful handicapper, has most likely already taken place. And, it happened in no more than 24 light readings of about 10 minutes each---a mere 240 minutes or 4 hours.
I can’t remotely
comprehend where I’d be at this very moment had that same 240 minutes fallen on me 40 years ago while still in my relative infancy. Don’t take me wrong, I’m not complaining a single iota. I’m just happy
that it eventually fell on me!
At the tender age of 12, I was educated by the “absolute best” players this planet had to offer, or ever will have to offer! They gave me my indoctrination without
any “strings” attached. They merely wanted our great “game” to go forward and flourish forever.
So do I!
I really had fun writing this 24-Part series. I mean it!
Just reminding myself that I would never again have to inhale while entombed inside the Queens Midtown Tunnel, was more than ample payment.
Additionally, momentarily drifting back to my
“2-live race cards-a-day” madcap summers was unreal. (How’s that for a real 60’s word?).
I had almost forgotten about my nightly overtaxing of my 62 Vet down the Garden State Parkway to Atlantic
City after Monmouth’s day card. I never wanted to miss a single race back then, as they were all mini-learning lessons. What’s more, at a time when the words “rolling double” had not so much as passed
thru the lips of the one who “coined” the term, I just had to make the daily double at Atlantic City. Win or lose, the daily double was always followed by an enjoyable card of night racing!
Thoughts like those gave me much pleasure thruout this writing!
I had to be literally insane during those days! Or perhaps it was the immaturity of my youth. It might even have been
my desire to become “somebody” by continually “beating” the toughest game on this planet.
Who knows and who really cares? But to quote “The Boss” himself Mr. Bruce Springsteen, those were, in
fact, “The Glory Days”!
Which brings us back to “reality” in the present moment.
If you have read the “Laws” from front to back, you are a genuine “player” in my mind or
quickly on your way to becoming one. Racing is in your blood! Fight as you might to overcome this most pleasant “habit”, trust me, it positively ain’t goin’ any place.
You inherited
that dreaded “H (handicapping) gene” from either or both sides of your pedigree. You are predisposed to have a good time and profitable day every time you visit a racetrack. And even if you lose once in
a while, most likely you would have also lost in the “real” world that specific day anyway. Taking it one step further, if you are going to have a bad day anyway, where better to have it than a
racetrack? Any racetrack!
Now that you know that you are a true “horseaholic” in every sense of the word I offer you a few more “paddock notes”.
You have chosen to play the toughest
game ever conceived by mankind----bar none! It will take you to incredible highs and just as quickly bring you down faster than one of the many “blind” state stewards spread across the country.
As you move through these “peaks and valleys”, always keep your balance!
Ups and downs are normal parts of our game that you must master like speed, pace, pedigree, trip, etc. Hard
work and sound application have always worked with every human endeavor and they work with horse racing.
There are no “shortcuts” of any kind to winning. Nor is there any foolproof “magical
system” of the century that will produce annual profits year in and year out.
You must work on your own personal methodology every single day of your life until you feel 110% confident with it in any
situation. Weak-kneed Willies are well advised to find a “softer” spot. To continually beat this game or any game in life, you not only know your strengths, but even more so, your weaknesses! Your
strengths will never hurt your bankroll. Need I go further?
Once you actually feel 110 % confident because you’ve become a winner, your methodology must continually be refined to reflect the many
constant changes in our great game. Stated another way, you can’t win in a “dynamic game” using “stagnant and long-outdated rules” or “Immutable Laws” such as those defined in this writing.
Finally, remember that the dreaded “H gene” is as much a part of you as one of your limbs. If you already have this pleasant disease, why not profit from it?
See you in the paddock!
